Computing at Our Lady & St Thomas Primary School

At Our Lady & St Thomas, we believe that computing is an essential skill for life in the modern world. Our curriculum is designed to equip every child with the knowledge and confidence to use technology purposefully, creatively and safely. Rooted in our mission that each child is "unique, talented and loved by God", we offer a broad, balanced and engaging computing education that supports all learners to flourish.

Our Vision

We aim to empower pupils to become creators—not just consumers—of technology. Through the use of devices such as Chromebooks, iPads, programmable toys and Microbits, children gain practical experience and develop key digital skills that support their learning across the curriculum.

Curriculum Approach

Our Computing curriculum follows the Teach Computing scheme, adapted to ensure progression from Early Years to Year 6. It aligns with the National Curriculum, covering three core areas:

  • Computer Science – understanding how computers work and learning to code

  • Information Technology – using software and devices to create, store and present content

  • Digital Literacy – developing awareness of online safety and responsible digital behaviour

Children begin by exploring technology through play in Early Years, and go on to write programs, analyse data, create digital media and learn how networks and search engines operate by Key Stage 2.

Technology in the Classroom

  • Every class from EYFS to Y6 is equipped with a networked computer and interactive whiteboard.

  • Pupils have access to Chromebooks, iPads and digital recording equipment.

  • Dedicated computing lessons are enhanced by opportunities to use technology in subjects such as English, Maths, Science and History.

Online Safety

Online safety is central to our teaching. Children learn to use the internet responsibly, protect their personal information, and respect others online. These values are embedded through class discussions, digital floor books and assemblies, supported by our Online Safety and Acceptable Use Policies. See more information on our Online Safety page.

Inclusive Learning

We are committed to providing equal access to computing for all pupils. Lessons are adapted to support children with SEND, those with English as an additional language, and those working at greater depth. Targeted support and resources ensure every child can progress and succeed.
