Music at Our Lady & St Thomas Primary School

At Our Lady & St Thomas, we believe music is a vital part of a broad and balanced education. It encourages creativity, self-expression and collaboration, while building confidence and a sense of joy. Through a carefully planned and inclusive curriculum, every child has the opportunity to develop their musical talents and discover a lifelong love of music.

Our Vision

Music is woven into the fabric of school life. We aim to inspire all children—regardless of background or ability—to enjoy music, learn to play instruments and take pride in performing. Our mission, that each child is “unique, talented and loved by God,” is reflected in the rich variety of musical experiences we provide.

Curriculum Approach

We follow the Charanga Music scheme , which supports musical development from EYFS to Year 6. Weekly lessons (lasting 45 minutes to 1 hour) focus on:

  • Singing and vocal skills

  • Playing tuned and untuned instruments

  • Creating and composing music individually and in groups

  • Listening to and evaluating a wide range of musical styles and traditions

Pupils learn musical terminology and notation, develop aural memory, and explore how music is created, structured and performed.

Instrumental Tuition

All pupils experience playing a musical instrument by Year 3, with some exposure earlier in Key Stage 1. Through partnership with the Durham Music Service, children have access to violin and piano lessons, as well as opportunities to perform in school and beyond. Funding support is available to ensure equitable access for all pupils, including those eligible for Pupil Premium.

Performances and Partnerships

Music plays a central role in our school calendar. Children take part in:

  • Class and whole-school productions

  • Weekly hymn practice and liturgical music

  • Concerts and outreach events, including those at Durham Cathedral and with Durham Brass

  • Our annual OLST Fest, celebrating performance and creativity across the school

These opportunities foster self-confidence, teamwork and a strong sense of community.

Inclusive and Accessible Music for All

We are committed to inclusion in music. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND. This may involve using assistive technology, modified instruments, or differentiated tasks to ensure every child can participate fully and successfully.
