Physical Education at Our Lady & St Thomas Primary School
At Our Lady & St Thomas, we believe that physical education plays a vital role in developing the whole child—supporting physical health, emotional well-being and lifelong habits of activity. Guided by our mission that every child is “unique, talented and loved by God”, our PE curriculum promotes enjoyment, resilience, teamwork and confidence.
Our Vision
We aim to inspire every child to be physically active, confident and engaged through a wide range of sporting opportunities. Our curriculum ensures all pupils develop fundamental movement skills, improve fitness and gain the ability to work collaboratively and competitively.
Curriculum Approach
PE is taught across all year groups through the Primary PE Planning scheme, which provides a clear progression of physical skills and concepts. Lessons are delivered by both class teachers and specialist coaches to ensure high-quality instruction in:
-
Games (e.g. football, netball, tennis)
-
Gymnastics and dance
-
Athletics
-
Outdoor and adventurous activities
-
Swimming (see below)
To deepen learning and promote character development, we also use the Commando Jo's programme, which focuses on resilience, teamwork and problem-solving.
Swimming at Our School
Swimming is a vital life skill and a key part of our PE offer. All children in Key Stage 2 attend regular swimming lessons with the goal of achieving the National Curriculum target of swimming at least 25 metres, unaided, by the end of Year 6. Lessons are inclusive and carefully structured to support varying levels of confidence and ability. Additional support is provided to help every pupil succeed and progress is tracked to ensure this target is met.
Opportunities Beyond the Classroom
From Reception onwards, all children take part in sports festivals and competitions, both within school and across the county. Pupils in Years 5 and 6 attend a residential trip offering outdoor activities such as rock climbing and kayaking—building confidence and teamwork.
We also offer a wide range of extracurricular sports clubs, including football, dance, forest school, Thai boxing and more. Our Sports Ambassadors —pupils trained to lead playground activities—encourage active playtimes and celebrate sporting achievement in weekly assemblies.
Inclusion and Access
PE at Our Lady & St Thomas is inclusive and accessible for all children. We adapt lessons and provide tailored resources to support pupils with SEND or additional needs. Every child has equal access to activities, equipment and opportunities to succeed, regardless of background or ability.
